Lexden Springs School

Lexden Springs School is a special educational needs and disabilities school, currently based in Colchester and run by Essex County Council. The school is being relocated to a new campus in nearby Stanway, increasing capacity from 120 to 200 pupils as well as providing 30 boarding places.

Essex County Council engaged Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure as lead building contractor together with Curl La Tourelle Head Architecture as architect. The architect specified hard-wired electric integral blinds to be installed in windows and doors in the three residential blocks in order to provide privacy for the residents in a way that prevents interference by residents.

SGS Involvement

Morgan Sindall commissioned Anglia Fixing Ltd to supply and install the window frames and glazing. Following the successful delivery of the St Thomas More School project, Anglia Fixing immediately approached SGS to supply the integral blind system.

SGS worked closely with Anglia fixing, Morgan Sindall and their M&E team, assisting with the design and configuration of the blinds and their control system.

The architect specified that there be a blind in every window, each one to be controlled remotely from the house manager’s office. A building management system would have provided the most effective solutions, but this was beyond the allowed budget. SGS designed a system that allowed each blind to be controlled using a simple switch from just outside the room, preventing access by unauthorized users, but enabling the blind to be operated by a member of staff within sight of the blind.

SGS recommended that the bathrooms be glazed with obscure glass instead of with a blind in order to prevent the risk of a blind being accidentally raised while the bathroom is in use.

SGS also provided indicative wiring schematics for the system, together with full wiring and installation instructions to the M&E team.
